EXPLORING BRUNY ISLAND

If you're planning a trip to Tasmania, Bruny Island should definitely be on your itinerary. Located off the southeast coast of Tasmania, it is full of nature, beautiful landscapes and wildlife.

We just spent 2 nights at Bruny Island on our Tassie road trip and loved it! Sadly was raining quite a lot so there was a few things we missed out on doing but it just made our time in nature even more so relaxing!

Getting there….

You can catch the ferry to the island from Kettering (30ish mins from Hobart) from $48.50 return.

You can pre purchase your tickets and check timetable via SeaLink or buy a ticket on arrival. There is no booking required, ferry leaves about every 20 minutes. Be prepared to queue during busier time periods.

Things to do…

There is something for everyone on this beautiful island from hikes, food to adventure! Here are a few things to get up to on your visit!

See penguins - At dusk you can go to a viewing platform at The Neck and keep an eye out for penguins.  You’ll need a red torch to see them as it will be dark & flash lights blind their eyes temporarily.

Pennicott Wilderness Cruise - The 3 hour cruise leaves from Adventure Bay daily and is $155 per person.

The cruise is full of wildlife such as seals, dolphins and whales if you’re lucky to be traveling in migrating seasons. The cruise also takes you along the coastline to see some of Australia’s highest sea cliffs as well as sea caves and epic views of the ‘The Monument’ and more.

Recommend to book a few days in advance so you don’t miss out. You can book via their website.

Bruny Island Honey - Stop in here to taste some of the yummy local honey + souvenirs and other honey treats like hot sauce!!

You can even watch the bees in their hive in the store. My recommendation is to try the BBQ Habanero + Honey hot sauce!

Hike Cape Queen Elizabeth - A beautiful 3 hour return (12kish), walk through bush, sand dunes and beaches!

Spot the famous white wallabies - Keep an eye out for these cuties on the south side of Adventure Bay!

Instagramable Spots …

No gatekeeping here!! These are a few of the spots you’ll see on your instagram feed when researching the island!

The Neck / Truganini Lookout  - Where the North & The South part of Bruny meet. Make your way up the stairs to the lookout for a perfect little piccy opportunity!

Mars Bluff: You’ll find this on the the Cape Queen Elizabeth Track. About a 3 hour walk with beautiful views.

Food…

If you're a foodie, Bruny Island won't disappoint you either. From fresh seafood to honey to cheese! The Island has you covered.

Get Shucked - Oyster fans this one is for you! Not too far from arrival on the island you’ll go past a little oyster shack and it’s a must! Tasty, fresh oysters are the best greeting to your stay on the island!

Hotel Bruny - Who doesn’t love classic heart warming food! Located in Alonnah, we stopped in here on a cold day and enjoyed a warm beef curry!

Bruny Island Cheese - Where are my cheese lovers at? Sadly for me I have a dairy allergy but go enjoy some fresh cheese for me! Their cellar door is open 7 days for cheese and beer tastings.

Where to stay…

Air Bnb - We stayed at Birdsong which can be booked via Airbnb! This one is great as it has everything you could imagine in the kitchen. Would recommend getting groceries before heading to the Island in Hobart or Kingston. Made cooking a breeze. As well as 2 bedrooms, outdoor tub, and a beautiful view of adventure bay!

Camping - There are so many beautiful campsites in Tasmania and if you prefer having a van or bringing along the tent you can check out some great sites on Hipcamp

Thanks so much for reading, we hope you enjoy your day!
